Use Your CPU to Mine Cryptocurrency: The Pirate Bay Could be Doing it

Gaining revenue from adverts on a pirate website is very difficult as few companies want their marketing on a pirating site to be attached. This pushed the hosting illegal downloads websites to go for any direction they could, and The Pirate Bay may have found something completely different.

The past weekend, many The Pirate Bay visitors have noticed a rising in the CPU percentage usage when the person was browsing through pages of the website. After the research done, there was a CPU mining script found on the code of the website. It uses a mining courtesy of Coinhive which made the JavaScript Miner. In general it is used to mine the Monero Digital Currency using a visitor’s CPU.

TorrentFreak did take the matter for important and found out that the code appeared functioning only in search results and category listing but not in the torrent listing or the most visited – homepage.

After contacting with The Pirate Bay, TF were noted out that the miner was tested for less than a day to see if it could generate enough revenue. In the case it did it could be a permanent addition to the website later on.

On the Pirates Forum, Administrator and TPB Supermod Sid acknowledged the presence of the miner and expressed his anger at The Pirate Bay. However according to him there is a way to stop it.

Using Script Blocking Extensions like NoScript or ScriptBlock. The Pirate Bay can be added on the blacklist after installing the scrip-blocker which could be followed with problems on the comment section and viewing list. Or your Ad-Block can be used by adding the the miner url as a custom filter on the footer that you find.

With this the miner could be stopped by The Pirate Bay and from other website too the use the Coinhive JavaScript on their website.
